Configuring IPv6 EIGRP Adjacency in Cisco IOS

IPv6 EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol) adjacency allows routers to exchange routing information over IPv6 networks. This documentation outlines the steps to configure IPv6 EIGRP adjacency and provides verification commands.

Configuring IPv6 EIGRP Adjacency

To establish an IPv6 EIGRP adjacency, follow these steps:

  1. Adjacency via Link Local Address: IPv6 EIGRP adjacencies are formed using the link local address (not the Global Unicast Address or GUA). Ensure that you have enabled IPv6 unicast routing on your router.

  2. Enable IPv6 Unicast Routing: IPv6 unicast routing must be enabled globally on the router using the command ipv6 unicast-routing.

  3. Enable on Specific Interface: IPv6 EIGRP adjacency should be enabled on specific interfaces where IPv6 addresses exist. Unlike IPv4, there is no need for network commands in IPv6 EIGRP.

  4. Router ID Configuration: In cases where no IPv4 addresses are configured on the router, you may need to manually set the router ID for EIGRP. This is especially important for routers without IPv4 configurations.

  5. Check for 'Shutdown' Default: Be aware that earlier IOS versions may have the EIGRP process in a 'shutdown' state by default. Ensure the EIGRP process is active.

  6. No Network Command: Unlike IPv4 EIGRP, IPv6 EIGRP does not require network commands to enable it. Instead, you must enable it directly under the interface configuration.

Verification

To verify the configuration and status of IPv6 EIGRP adjacencies, use the following commands:

  • show ipv6 eigrp neighbors: Displays information about neighboring routers participating in IPv6 EIGRP.
  • show ipv6 eigrp topology: Shows the IPv6 EIGRP topology table, providing insights into the routing information.
  • show ipv6 eigrp interfaces: Lists all interfaces where IPv6 EIGRP is enabled.
  • show ipv6 route eigrp: Displays IPv6 EIGRP routing information, including routes learned via EIGRP.

Configuring IPv6 EIGRP adjacencies is crucial for routers to efficiently exchange routing information over IPv6 networks. Follow these steps and use the verification commands to ensure proper configuration and operation.
